UNDERSTAND YOUR EXAM

A practical guide to CPA FAR

Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR) is one of the three required Core sections of the Uniform CPA Examination. It tests how you apply financial reporting knowledge across business entities, not-for-profits, and state and local governments.

Use this 2026 FAR guide to understand the exam, organize your study around the current AICPA blueprint, and take a short free readiness check when you want a focused starting point.

What is the CPA FAR exam?

FAR is the Financial Accounting and Reporting Core section of the CPA Exam. Every CPA candidate must pass FAR, AUD, and REG, then choose one Discipline section: BAR, ISC, or TCP.

FAR asks you to prepare, review, and analyze financial information. The work spans for-profit, nongovernmental not-for-profit, and state and local government reporting rather than a single accounting setting.

CPA FAR format and scoring in 2026

FAR is a four-hour computer-based section with five testlets: two multiple-choice question (MCQ) testlets of 25 questions each, followed by three task-based simulation (TBS) testlets with 2, 3, and 2 simulations. That is 50 MCQs and 7 TBSs in total.

FAR MCQs and TBSs each make up 50% of the weighted score. Scores are reported on a 0–99 scale, and 75 is the passing standard. A 75 is a scaled score, not 75% correct, and scores are not curved.

What to study for CPA FAR

The 2026 FAR blueprint organizes content into Financial Reporting (30–40%), Select Balance Sheet Accounts (30–40%), and Select Transactions (25–35%). Use those ranges to plan coverage, but do not skip a lower-weighted topic simply because it appears less often.

Build from financial statements, disclosures, and government concepts into account-level work such as cash, receivables, inventory, long-term assets, investments, debt, and equity. Then practice transactions including revenue, leases, taxes, fair value, contingencies, subsequent events, and error corrections.

How to study for FAR effectively

Start with the current AICPA blueprint as your checklist. Learn the rule and the reason behind it, then alternate short concept review with MCQs that require you to apply that concept in a new fact pattern.

Add scenario-based work as you progress. For every missed item, label the cause—knowledge gap, calculation, reading detail, or accounting judgment—then revisit the matching topic before doing a short set under time pressure.

CPA FAR registration and cost context

You apply to take FAR through the jurisdiction where you are a CPA candidate. After eligibility and registration steps, an active Notice to Schedule lets you book with Prometric. FAR is available through year-round continuous testing, subject to individual test-center availability.

Do not assume one universal FAR fee. NASBA says the total can include examination, application, and administration fees and varies by jurisdiction; Guam and international testing can add administration fees. Check your jurisdiction’s application materials before you register.

Practical next steps for FAR prep

Download the current FAR blueprint, map your study blocks to its three content areas, and use the AICPA sample test to become familiar with exam software. The official sample test is a shorter, unscored software-familiarity tool, not a readiness result.

Take the free FAR readiness check for a quick study starting point. Anyone can take it without a login; Google sign-in saves a private result. Use its feedback to direct the next block of study, then return for a free reassessment. Optional FAR study access is a one-time section purchase for 90 days, not a subscription or an all-exam unlock.

CLEAR ANSWERS, BEFORE YOU START

CPA FAR questions, answered

How many questions are on CPA FAR?

FAR has 50 multiple-choice questions and 7 task-based simulations. The MCQs appear in two 25-question testlets, followed by TBS testlets containing 2, 3, and 2 simulations.

How long is the FAR exam?

FAR allows four hours of testing time. NASBA also states that candidates are offered a standardized 15-minute break around the midpoint that does not count against testing time; optional breaks between testlets do count against it.

Is a 75 on FAR the same as 75% correct?

No. A 75 is the CPA Exam passing standard on a 0–99 scaled score scale. It is not a raw percentage of items answered correctly, and the exam is not curved.

What is the difference between FAR MCQs and task-based simulations?

An MCQ asks you to select an answer. A TBS presents a work-related accounting scenario that can require you to use provided information, make calculations, complete a task, or analyze supporting documents. Both item types each contribute 50% of the FAR weighted score.

What are the main FAR topics?

The 2026 blueprint groups FAR into Financial Reporting, Select Balance Sheet Accounts, and Select Transactions. Those areas include financial statements and disclosures, not-for-profit and government reporting, account balances, and transactions such as revenue, leases, income taxes, and error corrections.

How much does it cost to take FAR?

There is no single national FAR total. Examination, application, and administration fees vary by jurisdiction, and some locations can add administration fees. Review the application materials for the jurisdiction where you are applying before scheduling.
