A practical guide to CPA ISC

CPA Information Systems and Controls (ISC) is one of the three Discipline options in the Uniform CPA Examination. Candidates pass ISC or another Discipline alongside the AUD, FAR and REG Core sections.

Use the 2026 AICPA blueprint to organize your preparation. This guide explains the ISC question mix, why a 75 is a scaled score rather than a percentage, and how to focus your study.

What is the CPA ISC discipline?

ISC is the technology-focused CPA Discipline for candidates interested in information systems, data management, security and SOC engagements. It is one of three Discipline choices; passing ISC does not create a different CPA license from passing BAR or TCP.

ISC complements the audit foundation in AUD, then goes further into systems, controls and technology-related assurance work. Choose it because the subject matter fits your interests and preparation plan, not because of a presumed shortcut.

ISC exam format and scoring

ISC is a four-hour computer-based section with five testlets. The first two testlets contain 41 multiple-choice questions each; the final three contain 1, 3 and 2 task-based simulations, for 82 MCQs and 6 TBSs in all.

MCQs contribute 60% of the ISC score and TBSs 40%. CPA Exam section scores use a 0–99 scale, and 75 is the passing standard. It is a scaled score, not 75% correct, so a raw practice percentage cannot be converted into an official score.

What to study for CPA ISC

The 2026 ISC blueprint organizes testable content into Information Systems and Data Management; Security, Confidentiality and Privacy; and considerations for SOC engagements. Read the blueprint’s Areas, Groups, Topics and task statements before assigning study time.

Build working comparisons rather than a list of disconnected acronyms: IT general versus application controls, data governance and lifecycle concepts, security and privacy responsibilities, and the purpose and reporting considerations of SOC engagements. Keep the smaller SOC area in your plan instead of treating it as optional.

How to build an ISC study routine

Start each blueprint topic by learning the vocabulary and the control objective behind it. Then use short, targeted MCQ sets to identify errors in concepts, distinctions or judgment. Review the explanation before moving on, and keep a concise list of ideas you confused.

Make room for task-based simulations as well as MCQs. Practice reading the facts, exhibits and requirement before choosing a response, then explain why a control, report or action fits the scenario. The AICPA sample test can help you become familiar with the exam software before test day.

CPA ISC registration and cost context

Confirm eligibility, application steps and scheduling instructions with the board of accountancy for the jurisdiction where you are applying. The CPA Exam is administered by section, but licensure rules and credit periods are set by the jurisdiction.

There is no single CPA ISC price to quote. NASBA says total cost can include application, administration and examination fees, and it varies by jurisdiction; testing in Guam or at an International Testing Center can add administration fees. Use your jurisdiction’s current application materials before budgeting or paying.

Practical next steps for ISC

First, verify your jurisdiction’s requirements and confirm that ISC is your chosen Discipline. Download the effective 2026 blueprint, map its areas to your available study time, and choose an exam date only after checking your jurisdiction’s process and current appointment availability.

Next, take a short free ISC readiness check to find an initial study focus. Use the result to begin with one topic, work short practice sets and review feedback. Keep your plan flexible as you learn which distinctions or scenario types need more work.

CLEAR ANSWERS, BEFORE YOU START

CPA ISC questions, answered

What is ISC on the CPA Exam?

Information Systems and Controls is one of the three CPA Exam Discipline choices. Candidates pass AUD, FAR and REG plus one Discipline: ISC, BAR or TCP. ISC covers information systems, data management, security, privacy and SOC engagement considerations.

How many questions are on the CPA ISC exam?

ISC has 82 multiple-choice questions and 6 task-based simulations across five testlets. The section is four hours long, with 41 MCQs in each of the first two testlets and TBSs in the remaining three.

Does a 75 on ISC mean 75% correct?

No. A 75 is the CPA Exam passing standard on a 0–99 scaled score scale. It is not a percentage correct, and the AICPA does not provide a raw-percent conversion that can turn practice results into an official score.

What topics should I prioritize for ISC?

Study all three blueprint areas: Information Systems and Data Management; Security, Confidentiality and Privacy; and SOC engagement considerations. Use the current AICPA blueprint to see the detailed topics, task statements and score-weight ranges, then give extra review to concepts you repeatedly confuse.

How much does it cost to register for CPA ISC?

Fees are jurisdiction-dependent, so there is no universal ISC registration amount. Your total can include application, administration and examination fees, and other fees may apply at Guam or International Testing Centers. Check your board or jurisdiction application materials for the current amount.

Is a readiness check an official ISC result or a full exam simulation?

No. A practice readiness check is an unofficial learning tool and cannot determine your official CPA Exam result or guarantee a pass. Available study materials are scoped to short quizzes and practice, feedback, lessons and flashcards; they are not a complete official-format adaptive ISC simulation.
